Anyone else feel like life is too busy? Before we know it every bit of our time is scheduled. Between work, friends and church commitments, life is jam packed and that’s not even taking into account our kids and their school and social calendars.
It seems that today people wear their busyness as a badge of honor. If I am busy, it must mean I’m important, it must mean I’m relevant and necessary and crucial. If I am busy, it surely shows that people need me. And so, in some ways we become addicted to busyness. We barely know what to do with ourselves when we’re not busy and so we multitask. We become hyper busy. Watching a movie is not busy enough, so we play on our mobile at the same time. There are countless knock on effects to living at this pace… we are stressed, we are anxious, we battle to sleep at night, and to be still.
The thing is, we weren’t created to be busy. We weren’t designed to fill up every waking hour with tasks and to-do lists. We were created to have an ongoing, interactive, life-giving relationship with our Heavenly Father. Being overly busy makes that very difficult.
As believers we need to reassess our way of life. We need to open our eyes to ways in which we’re being pulled along by the culture of the day. We need to remind ourselves that busyness is not something that God has modelled to us. On the contrary, He modeled rest on the seventh day of Creation. In the Old Covenant He even commanded His people to sabbath. In the midst of the demands of so many, Jesus went away by Himself to pray, He took time to chat with children and to the Samaritan woman, He napped while His friends sailed through storms.
You are not your provider. God is. You are not your Savior. Jesus is. You can quit working yourself to the bone. You can quit striving. It is finished! He has done it all! I want to challenge you today to reassess your priorities and the way you spend your time. Realign your focus upon God making His desires your desires. When we rely on Him, when we lean on Him, when we wait on Him, when we follow His will for our lives, He has our back and He will bring His promises to pass.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
