There are many single folk in churches, hoping to find the person that they will spend the rest of their lives with and if that’s you, I do believe that looking for such a person, within the body of Christ, is a good start. The Bible cautions that as a believer you should not even consider marrying a person who does not share your faith.
That said, there is more to getting married than simply finding a good godly believer. I know so many single people who have a long list of requirements that any potential spouse would have to fulfil – and within reason that’s fine, but too few give any great thought to what they need to do to prepare themselves for marriage.
The most powerful piece of advice I can give to single folk hoping to get married is this: develop a relationship with God First, come under and support the vision of your local Pastor, then start serving in your local church.
Why do I say that? Because it will train and prepare you for a God-honoring marriage in ways you can hardly imagine.
In Ephesians 5, God calls couples to submit to one another, wives to submit to the godly leadership of their husbands and for husbands to lay down their lives for their wives.
If that sort of behaviour came naturally to us as humans, God wouldn’t have to remind us to do it. It doesn’t! It takes a conscious decision and plenty of practice to follow leadership. It takes a conscious decision and plenty of practice to live a sacrificial life. And yet this is what God is calling us to do. If you want to lay the foundations of a solid, God-honoring marriage, now would be a good time to start.
